From Skeptic to Sake Lover

I used to think sake just wasn’t for me. My only experience? A warm, almost too harsh cup that didn’t quite hit the mark. But after meeting a Sake Samurai—yes, that’s a real title—I realized I’d been sipping all wrong.

Sake isn’t just one thing. It’s not limited to that scalding-hot shot at a sushi joint—it’s a surprisingly versatile spirit that pairs beautifully with a wide range of dishes. From fresh seafood to rich braised meats and even comforting noodle dishes, there’s a sake that elevates every bite.

I learned this firsthand from Michael Tremblay, one of only two Sake Samurais in Canada, who is on a mission to help Canadians discover sake beyond sushi and appreciate its depth and complexity. I met Michael at an immersive sake event hosted by the Consulate General of Japan and the Japanese External Trade Organization, where he led tastings and unexpected food pairings, proving that sake deserves a place on more than just Japanese menus.

With options like a chilled Ginjo with delicate fruity notes, a warm Junmai with deep umami richness, or my personal favourite, a bold Yuzu sake with a citrusy punch, sake satisfies all palates and seasons. The biggest surprise? Sake with dessert! A crisp sake alongside a decadent green tea cheesecake was an unexpected but perfect match in my books.

I walked in a skeptic and left a believer. Sake deserves a spot on more menus, more bar carts, more dinner tables and alongside more desserts! So, the next time you reach for a drink, give sake a shot—you might just find a new favourite like I did. Kanpai!
