Have You Ever Tried Making Your Own Sausage Rolls?
I hadn’t—until recently—and I don’t know why I waited this long. Sausage rolls have always been a go-to in my house, but I never thought to make them from scratch because it was easier to throw money at that problem. One of my favourite places to get them from is this cute little bake shop in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Niagara Home Bakery. They make the best apple pie and some pretty incredible butter tarts too. Turns out, sausages rolls are ridiculously simple and quick to whip up, and they’ve already become a family favourite.
Perfect as a snack, an appetizer, or even a quick lunch, sausage rolls check all the boxes. They’re savory, satisfying, and the kind of dish that everyone reaches for seconds (and thirds). And since you’re mincing everything in the food processor, you can sneak in your fave veggies and no one will know, especially the picky eaters! The best part? You can make them ahead of time, freeze them, and reheat them whenever you need something easy and delicious.
I made them for the first time last weekend, and they disappeared faster than I expected. The flaky pastry and flavourful filling were such a hit, they’ve officially earned top spot on my “quick and easy” recipe list.
You can keep them simple with just three ingredients – sausage meat, puff pastry and herbs, or you can use ground pork and season them how you like.
There are endless ways to elevate sausage rolls with unique variations and flavours. Here are some popular options you can try:
Classic with a Twist
- Caramelized Onions: Add a layer of sweet caramelized onions for a burst of flavour.
- Cheese-Filled: Mix grated cheddar, mozzarella, or even blue cheese into the sausage filling for a cheesy surprise.
Alternative Fillings
- Chicken & Tarragon: Swap pork for ground chicken and add tarragon for a lighter, fragrant option.
- Lamb & Mint: Use minced lamb with mint and a hint of cumin for a Mediterranean-inspired take.
Sweet & Savory Combos
- Apple & Sage: Add diced apple to the filling for a hint of sweetness that complements pork beautifully.
- Cranberry & Brie: Perfect for the holidays—add cranberry sauce and small chunks of brie for a festive twist.
So, if you’re looking for something simple yet impressive, give my homemade sausage rolls a try. They might just become a staple in your home, too. And trust me, once you start making them, store-bought will never quite measure up.
Sausage Rolls
Prep Time: 20 minutes | Cook Time: 20-25 minutes | Total Time: 45 minutes | Servings: 8
Ingredients:
2 sheets puff pastry, thawed
2 lbs ground pork
1.5 cups bread crumbs
2 tsp dried Italian seasoning
2 tsp dried parsley
2 tsp salt
1 tsp black pepper
2 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp cayenne pepper
Dash ground nutmeg
½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
3/4 cup water
2 eggs, for egg wash, optional
Directions:
Sausage
- Add ground pork, bread crumbs, all seasoning, Parmesan and water to bowl of food processor fitted with steel blade. Process for about 20-30 seconds, or until desired consistency is reached.
- Cook a small amount of sausage on a frying pan with a little butter or coking spray to taste for seasoning. Adjust seasoning as needed and process for another 20-30 seconds.
- Cover and refrigerate.
Sausage Rolls
- Preheat oven to 425° F.
- Unroll puff pastry sheets on a lightly floured surface. Cut in half lengthwise.
- Place a roll of the sausage mixture on one side of the pastry sheet. Brush some of the egg wash on the opposite side and roll puff pastry to seal it.
- Make sure the roll is thoroughly sealed. Repeat with the rest of the puff pastry and remaining sausage.
- Cut each roll to desired size. I cut each roll into three pieces.
- Using a sharp knife or a bread lame, cut 2 to 3 diagonal slits in each piece.
- Place sausage rolls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Brush each roll with egg wash. Bake at 425° F for 20 to 25 minutes, or until golden brown and sausage is completely cooked.
- Cool 10 minutes before serving.
Bon Appétit!
